A family member called RCM Health for help with advocacy.

The 62 year old patriarch who was at the cottage was very sick. He was admitted to the ICU in a community hospital in cottage country.

It was clear that his health problems were too complex for the small community hospital.

That was a rational assumption.

We and the family agreed that it would be best if he was flown, possibly by Orange, to a large academic teaching hospital for specialized care.

That seemed simple.

But it was not simple.

We were told that the care in the ICU in the small community hospital was the same care that he would get in a large academic hospital.

That information provided was false. So, no transfer.

We were told that he was out of the catchment area for the large academic centres.

So, no transfer.

We were told that all the beds at all the large academic centres which were canvassed by our team were full.

Possibly true.

Some were only taking COVID patients. No one would accept our patient with his specific complex health crisis.

So the big lesson is ” DO NOT GET SICK IN COTTAGE COUNTRY”. Put that one your fridge.

My radical curiousity has lead me to ask where are the Canadian manufacturers of COVID vaccine.

We used to hae Connaught Labs at Steeles Avenue and Dufferin St in North York. Then it disappeared. No more vaccine capacity of significance in Canada.

Then recently, I learned about Medicago and its greenhouses in Quebec City.

This business is one of the most interesting and innovative organizations that I have ever heard or read about and I have been around for a while.

Medicago uses plants as bioreactors. The plants produce virus like particles (VLP) which resemble Sars-COV-2. Spike proteins and all.

Check this out below. The virus and the virus like particle.

The virus like particles (VLPs) are injected into us humans which results in the development of antibodies to COVID 19.

Medicago has partnered with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to produce the final vaccine which is entering into phase 3 trials at this time.

I am a total supporter of Medicago and wish them well on the way to making 1,000,000,000 vaccines per year. By the way, they also have a vaccine for Ebola.

High fives all around.

Dr Vincent Lam writes in the Globe & Mail that not involving Canada’s 40,000 family doctors in the distribution of COVID 19 vaccine is a huge and tragic mistake.

If family doctors give about 50% of all flu vaccines, then why would Public Health not involve family doctors in the distribution of COVID 19 vaccine?

This is a head scratching moment.

Lives depend on this very poor decision about distribution.

Who is making this decision? Public health? Provincial health? The Feds? The bureaucrats? Who?

Has anyone asked the authors of BlitzScaling what to do? That is Reid Hoffman and Chris Yeh.

If you asked Hoffman, of Linkedin fame, and Yeh what to do they would say that we need “SCALEABLE DISTRIBUTION”.

Using hockey rinks and community centres for COVID 19 vaccine distribution is not scaleable distribution.

Using established distribution channels such as family doctor’s offices and pharmacy chains is scaleable distribution.

The Public Health folks should ask logistics experts knowledgeable in healthcare what to do and not those with the knowledge of moving tanks and battalions.

Ask the experts at the Rotman Business school or the Schulich School of Business or the Ivey School of Business about scaleable distribution of COVID 19 vaccine.

Lives depend on how this is done.

Why are we acting like ludites when approaching Vaccine distribution?

And let’s not forget about the vaccine database that is being developed too late to be of any use.

That’s another $16M mistake.

Let’s put the smart and informed decision makers to work fixing this mess.

Anger elicits a robust physiological response that includes increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration, but it can also affect attention and memory formation. Anger generally makes people more confident in the accuracy of their memories. Findings from a new study suggest that anger makes people more open to misinformation and conspiracy theories.
Exposure to misinformation can distort memory of past events, a phenomenon known as misinformation effect.
The two-part study involved 79 adults . In the first part of the study, participants watched a short excerpt of a movie. Then they participated in a scripted interview during which they experienced either a neutral exposure or an anger-inducing exposure. Afterward, they completed a test that included misinformation in the questions.
In the second part, half of the participants were asked to write about a time they visited a museum (a neutral exposure), while the other half were asked to write about an event that made them angry (an anger exposure). Then they took a test to assess how much they could accurately recall about the movie and how much misinformation they had absorbed.
The tests revealed that anger did not impair the participants’ ability to recognize details that actually appeared in the movie. But the participants who experienced the anger exposure were more vulnerable to misinformation than those who experienced the neutral exposure.
The participants who experienced the anger exposure were more likely to be very confident in the accuracy of their memories. However, the more confident they were, the less accurate their memories.
These findings suggest that anger influences memory encoding via increased susceptibility to misinformation and conspiracy theories.

After 3 years of investigations and consultations with many medical doctors for 2 big neurological problems including Alzheimers and hydrocephalus, the three highly respected specialists finally agreed to a zoom case conference. This was organized by RCM Health Consultancy.

This case conference proved to be magical for the family. Raymond Rupert of RCM Health Consultancy was the facilitator. The 3 specialists were able to explain their viewpoints in plain English. The 3 specialists agreed on a neurosurgical procedure for the patient.

The logic and rationale were explained to the family for the first time. The family was able to understand the implications of the surgery including possible side effects and complications but also to understand the possible benefits. Emphasis on possible.

The team at RCM Health Consultancy is committed to organizing case conferences for our clients in order to give patients and their families the opportunity to contribute to the narrative, to understand the basis for decision making and for RCM to advocate for our client’s rights to access appropriate care.
